Patent Agent
Translates complex scientific inventions into legally precise patent applications and shepherds them through the USPTO review process ('prosecution'), arguing why inventions deserve protection. Reads invention disclosures and scientific literature, searches for prior art to assess novelty, drafts technical documents with carefully constructed patent claims, responds to USPTO office actions, and advises scientists and business teams on IP strategy and freedom-to-operate questions.
Patent Technical Advisor
Uses deep scientific expertise to support patent attorneys in preparing, filing, and defending patent applications—serving as the critical bridge between inventors and the legal team. Reads and analyzes technical inventions, searches scientific literature and patent databases for prior art, drafts patent application language, and helps formulate arguments in response to USPTO office actions. Often a stepping stone to becoming a registered Patent Agent.
Policy Analyst / Policy Advisor
Reads, synthesizes, and interprets scientific research to inform government officials, legislators, and organizational leaders about how science relates to public-policy decisions. Monitors emerging research, drafts policy briefs and reports that translate complex scientific topics into accessible language for non-expert audiences, and advises decision-makers on the scientific dimensions of legislation, regulations, or funding priorities.
Technology Transfer Officer
Bridges the gap between academic research labs and the commercial world by reviewing invention disclosures from university scientists, evaluating the commercial potential of new discoveries, and managing IP portfolios. Negotiates and drafts licensing agreements with companies, conducts market research to identify potential industry partners, coordinates with patent attorneys on prosecution strategy, and educates faculty about IP policies and the path from lab to market.
Competitive Intelligence Analyst
Monitors and analyzes competitors' drug pipelines, clinical trial results, regulatory decisions, and market strategies, then synthesizes this information into clear reports and strategic recommendations for internal stakeholders. Scans scientific publications, conference proceedings, SEC filings, and proprietary databases to track the competitive landscape, and collaborates with R&D, commercial, medical affairs, and strategy teams to ensure portfolio decisions are informed by the latest competitive insights.
Knowledge Management Specialist
Organizes, curates, and shares an organization's scientific knowledge—including research data, publications, SOPs, and institutional expertise—so that R&D, regulatory affairs, and medical affairs teams can access the right information when they need it. Maintains knowledge repositories and databases, captures insights from subject-matter experts and codifies them into accessible formats, designs taxonomies for classifying scientific content, and trains colleagues on KM tools and best practices.
